San Diego Leadership Forum’s Value #7 – Diversity: Embracing All of God’s Creation
Leaders,
There is much discussion today around the term “diversity.” To provide clarity and offer a grounded, biblical perspective, we want to share how our organization views this value. While SDLF is not a religious nonprofit, we are explicitly faith-affirming (Value #6). Our understanding of diversity is rooted in the following principles:
Designed Variation: Human variety is not a mistake or a curse, but a deliberate part of creation. While all humans share a single origin and inherent dignity, we are intentionally fashioned with a wide array of ethnicities, languages, cultures, and traits.
The Power of the Body: Just as the Apostle Paul described the body as a system where every distinct member is necessary, our differences make us powerful. True diversity allows everyone to flourish within an interconnected and interdependent leadership community.
A Story of Unity: From the ancient scattering of languages at the Tower of Babel to the ultimate vision in Revelation of & “every nation, tribe, people, and language” standing together, the biblical narrative points toward a unified, cross-cultural future. Cultural backgrounds and social statuses do not divide us; they enrich our shared identity and purpose.
Real diversity is a challenge. Living and working with people who see the world through a different lens, hold different values, or operate out of different traditions takes effort. It requires intentionality—it does not happen by accident.
The San Diego Leadership Forum is committed to using our voice and influence to drive meaningful diversity. Because change starts with us, the SDLF Board has committed to the following immediate actions:
Board & Leadership Representation: We will review our board structure, forum leadership, and selection criteria to intentionally strive toward greater racial and ethnic diversity.
Strategic Partnerships: We will actively develop partnerships with leadership organizations that support and advance underrepresented and ethnic minority leaders.
Inclusive Programming: We will intentionally invite speakers and participants who bring lived experience and deep understanding to the struggles of racism and injustice in our city and nation.
Courageous Conversations: We expect our forum facilitators to host open, transparent, and respectful conversations about structural racism, exploring how leaders can be part of the solution. Many of our Forums are already taking these practical steps.
Resource Mobilization: We encourage our partners to invest their time, talent, and treasure into practically addressing these systemic needs.
As a servant leader, your voice and actions matter now more than ever. We invite you to walk humbly, love mercy, seek truth, and act justly to bring about lasting transformation in San Diego.
